BREAKING BARRIERS IN HISTORY-  Other Accomplishments

Bayard has done other things proving he has broken barriers , such as the controversy with the Southern Railway Company over discrimination.

On September 20th, 1947, Bayard tried to enter into the dining car on the Southern Railways train. After he was denied becuase of his race, Rustin decided to take the Southern Railway Company to court, so he could bring discrimination to everyones attention.

The case was taken to the Supreme Court of the State of New York. Then moved from the state court to a Federal court because of the issue between two different states. Bayard won the case.

Another one of Bayards accomplishments is leading the Southern Christian Leadership conference.  Bayard Rusin, Martin Luther King Jr., Ralph Abernathy, Fred Shuttlesworth, and others, founded this leadership conference in order to have an organization that could coordinate better civil rights protest activities across the South.

This organization was founded in Atlanta, Georgia, at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in 1957. This organization included boycotts, marches, and other form of nonviolent protest againt racial discrimination.

The organization focused on schools and efforts to desegregate cities in Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. It also played key roles in the March on Washington in 1963, the Selma Voting Rights Campaign, and March to Montgomery in 1965. It quickly moved to the forefront of the civil rights movement alongside other major civil rights groups.
